Abortion is illegal in Ireland, North and South, potentially punishable by life imprisonment. Yet at least 8,000 Irish women a year travel to England for abortions. They make this journey in secret and return in silence, some of them never telling a soul. The documentary follows the journey of three women who travel to mainland U.K. to access legal abortion.

Before the legalization of abortion in 1973 in the United States, thousands of women died from complications resulting from botched illegal abortions. It’s estimated that 60,000 – 80,000 women worldwide die annually from unsafe abortions.
The film portrays women who were forced to perform abortions using coat hangers, which became a symbol of the prochoice movement, needles and bike pumps when they couldn’t access legal abortions. It also focuses on current abortion rights activism in the US.

Am Mittwoch den 09.09.2009 gibt’s um 19:00h im K9 einen LaD.I.Y.fest Filmabend zur Mobilisierung gegen die “Tausend Kreuze für das Leben”-Demonstration fundamentalistischer Christen gegen Abtreibung am 26.09.09. Leider sind die Filme nur auf Englisch, aber trotzdem hier eine kurze Beschreibung auf Deutsch:

Abtreibung ist in Irland, sowohl Nord- als auch Südirland, illegal und kann potentiell mit lebenslanger Haft bestraft werden. Trotzdem reisen jedes Jahr mindestens 8000 irische Frauen nach England um dort abtreiben zu können. Der Film begleitet drei Frauen bei ihrer Reise.

Bevor Abtreibungen 1973 in den USA legal wurden, starben dort tausende von Frauen jedes Jahr an den Folgen illegaler Abtreibungen. Es wird geschätzt, dass auch heute weltweit 60.000 bis 80.000 Frauen jährlich daran sterben.
Der Film zeigt Frauen die gezwungen waren, mit Hilfe von Draht-Kleiderbügeln - die zum Symbol der Prochoice-Bewegung wurden - Stricknadeln und Fahrradpumpen abzutreiben, weil sie keinen Zugang zu legalen Abtreibungen hatten.
Außerdem wird die aktuelle Abtreibungsrechts-Bewegung in den USA porträtiert.
